Here are some examples of how Village Agents have been helpful within their communities:

A gentleman was referred to a Village Agent by a community nurse, who was concerned for his welfare. The man was suffering from a bone infection and receiving treatment at home with intravenous antibiotics. He had to use crutches, and as a result had severe mobility problems. He was unable to leave his home and consequently dependant upon neighbours for shopping and transport. He was receiving just £71 in benefit. He lived in a social housing property and could not afford to use the storage heaters, the only form of heating installed. The property was cold. One of the heaters was positioned by the glass-panelled, single-glazed front door, and thus heat was lost. The Village Agent arranged hospital transport via volunteer organisation CHAIN, with additional support for his travel costs. The Agent also contacted Age UK and organised a grant for his heating. He was provided with food vouchers and subsequently with supplies from a Food Bank, until his finances stabilised.

An 81-year-old lady received support from a Village Agent. As a result a much-needed bath lift will be fitted in the lady’s home, and Social Care staff are now assessing her other needs, The Village Agent has been present to support the client during these visits, and has also helped her to obtain the full attendance allowance to which she is entitled. The Agent has even found someone to do her garden.

In Compton, the Village Agent organised a Christmas Day community lunch for 11 older people who would otherwise have been alone, and who were unable to be accommodated at the community lunch being organised in Thatcham.
